You may have heard that moderate drinking can be good for your heart. This might be true for some drinkers (mainly middle-aged and older adults). But with heavy drinking, any potential benefits of alcohol are outweighed by serious risks to your health.

Alcohol Awareness Month is a good time to think about your drinking habits. Are you concerned that you might be drinking too much? Or are you worried about a loved one’s drinking?

For most adults, drinking alcohol in moderation doesn’t cause any serious health problems. If you choose to drink, set a limit:

No more than 1 drink a day for women
No more than 2 drinks a day for men
Risky drinking (like drinking a lot or while you are pregnant) can lead to injuries, birth defects, and health problems like liver disease. Drinking less or quitting can help lower your risk—and can even help you lose weight and save money!
